rock settlement of San Rocco

Two kilometers outside the town, along the Sorano – Castell’Azzara road, just before the bridge over the Lente river, take a small road on the left that leads directly to the San Rocco rock complex.

This rock complex is part of the Città del Tufo Archaeological Park, located on a large panoramic terrace.

This whole area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, the numerous settlements have left many traces but prove difficult to date.

Reached the complex, head towards the small church of San Rocco which still preserves the remains of a seventeenth-century fresco inside.

Throughout the area there are environments dug into the tuff: cave dwellings, tombs, dovecotes.

The extreme tip of the tufaceous spur, the so-called belvedere, is beautiful and evocative, from which you can enjoy a fabulous view of the valley below and the town of Sorano.

Also from San Rocco, precisely from behind the church, also begins the homonymous Via Cava, a very beautiful route that reaches the town directly.
